The sculptor Ron Nagle gave DeFeo one of his works (a pink cup) for her 60th birthday, on March 31, 1989. DeFeo drew the cup repeatedly before turning one drawing upside down and repeating that form as a "pillar of wisdom." She made 9 drawings in the series, all on the same type and size of paper. They were made in the spring/summer of 1989. On October 17th, DeFeo's studio was damaged in the Loma Prieta earthquake and she was forced to leave leave it. She moved into hospice and died November 11.
