In 2016, when the SFMOMA and Anglim Gilbert Gallery exhibited retrospectives of Bruce Conner’s art, artist Jean Conner (Conner’s widow) told SF Weekly that they had often worked in separate rooms. “He did so much work — I never knew what was going on,” she said then. “He would go off into a room and he would work, and I wouldn’t go in there. And I worked the same way.” This separateness also applied to exhibitions of their work, so Jean Conner’s art rarely showed alongside that of Bruce Conner, whose art was much better known. This is why Hosfelt Gallery’s new exhibit feels like a kind of corrective.
