Join us for a conversation with Dr. Devin Zuber who will discuss his book-in-progress, Angelheaded Hipsters: Art and Esotericism in Cold War California. The talk will explore how Jess, Robert Duncan, and other midcentury Bay Area poets and artists (including Bruce Conner) drew on various forms of alternative spirituality to ground a poetics of place, sometimes in ways that became entangled with nascent environmental concerns. Dr. Devin Zuber (MA, MPhil) is Associate Professor for American Studies, Religion, and Literature at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. His last book, A Language of Things, received the Borsch Rast Prize in 2020. He has published widely on the intersection of spirituality with aesthetics and poetics, including recent essays in Marina Abramović (Royal Academy of Art, London).
