One of the most ingenious and innovative artists of the last century, Bruce Conner was a shapeshifter, refusing to be constrained to a “signature” style or single artistic persona, derailing public acclaim and elusively evading definition or classification.
In UNTITLED MAY 2, 1968 Conner creates a grid of mandalas, themselves maps of the world. This is one of his earlier felt-tip pen drawings in what would become one of his signature modes of artmaking. In the lower left corner is what appears to be a rose, possibly an homage to Jay DeFeo. This piece was made just after he completed his legendary 1967 film, "The White Rose," that documented the removal of Jay DeFeo's iconic painting, "The Rose," (now in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art) from her Fillmore Street apartment in 1965.
