Overview

Surabhi Saraf (who performs under the name APNI) is a visual artist and composer whose immersive work weaves together sound, movement, video, animation, and live performance to blur the boundaries between self and other, body and Earth, spirit and technology.

Drawing from Hindustani musical traditions and experimental composition, her practice transforms listening into a portal for connection and healing. Through participatory installations and performances, she creates multisensory experiences that entangle emotions, histories, and speculative futures.

Apni is a spell-weaving sonic persona who explores identity, voice, and the alchemy of transformation. She is also the founder of Kinmakers (fka CEM), a shapeshifting practice of polyphonic world-building rituals, kinmaking, and somatic portals, co-organized with Laura Hyunjhee Kim.

Her performances have been presented at SFMOMA, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco; the Crow Museum of Asian Art, Dallas, Texas; the Thessaloniki Biennale; and NETMAGE 10, Bologna, Italy.  Her videos have been screened in Times Square, New York; at the Blanton Museum, Austin, Texas; and the Hunter Museum, Chattanooga, Tennessee. She is a recipient of the Eureka Fellowship and residencies at Pioneer Works and Harvestworks. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in Art and Technology.
