Sarah M. Newton American

Overview

Sarah Newton lives and works in San Francisco. Working primarily on paper in drawing, etching, and woodblock printing, Newton examines the built environment through its overlooked structures and margins. Her work attends to sites of industry, construction, and infrastructure along the edge of the San Francisco Bay, observing the ways these transitional landscapes register the continual processes of change that shape the city.

Grounded in close observation, her drawings isolate fragments of the everyday that often escape notice. Through deliberate mark-making and the material specificity of printmaking, Newton considers the relationship between place, labor, and perception, revealing the quiet complexity of environments that exist beyond the center of attention.

Newton received a BFA in Printmaking from California College of the Arts. Her work has appeared in New American Paintings, the Manifest International Drawing Annual, and Bay Nature magazine. Recent exhibitions include (Un)planned Landscapes at Gearbox Gallery, Oakland (2022), the de Young Open at the de Young Museum, San Francisco (2020), and group exhibitions in London and Yokohama. She has participated in residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Monson Arts, Penland School of Craft, and Playa. Her artist's book That's It, Liquor Beer Wine was published by the San Francisco Center for the Book.
