“Chair–No–Bell.” Get it? Chernobyl. “Russian in where angels fear to tread…”
On April 25th and 26th, 1986 a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the U.S.S.R. failed due to human mismanagement and poor design.
Two people were killed during the catastrophe, fifty emergency workers (who “rushed in” to put out subsequent fires) died of acute radiation poisoning shortly after and within months, fifteen children died of thyroid cancer. A peer-reviewed paper published in the International Journal of Cancer in 2006, estimates the total death toll from cancer caused by Chernobyl’s failure will be 4,000 people.
The estimated cost of overall damage caused by the accident, including clean up and containment, is $235 billion.
