Rina Banerjee, an artist living and working in Manhattan’s Garment District, works with an ever-widening array of materials from a colonial or historical imagination, a place in time where commerce and ancient and industrial or electronic manufacturing drew migrations of people to source nature, fashion textiles, and domestic furnishings to be in perpetual travel. Her upcoming projects include: the 57th Venice Biennale, curated by Christine Macel of the Centre Pompidou, that opens with her sculptures at the Venice Arsenal in May 2017; the U.S. Biennial, Prospect 4, New Orleans, curated by artistic director Trevor Schoonmaker; and a solo exhibition curated by Jodi Throckmorton at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, opening in fall 2018.
