When Gideon Rubin draws a blank, he is not befuddled. Rather, he is masking the face of a stranger whose photo he has found in a vintage album. He discovers these albums around the world, then paints sweet-looking portraits that evoke the innocence of a children's storybook, though his subjects have no faces.
