Campbell, an MIT engineer who decided to commit himself to art, is known in certain circles in New York—a piece of his is in the current Whitney show “Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965–2018,” for instance—but he’s much, much better known in San Francisco, where his permanent 130-foot LED installation on Salesforce Tower is said to be the “most visible public artwork in the West.”
