Alfredo Jaar: Let there be Light

Overview

“If history doesn’t end up in the museum, it dies.”

Chilean born artist Alfredo Jaar has exhibited his photographic-based sculptural installations throughout the world. His work re-reads and re-claims histories of conflict, injustice and atrocity. Using the aesthetic strategies of illuminance and combination, Jaar contrasts the grand schemes and myths of history with their living effects: individuals and the conditions of their living and working.

Hosfelt Gallery will exhibit an installation comprised of illuminated transparencies which deal with the recent ethnic violence and resulting crises in Africa. In his powerful and eloquent telling of these stories, Jaar transcends political specificity and draws up universal themes of human tragedy and strength of spirit.
