Susan Main: Paintings

Susan Main begins her paintings with stream of consciousness writing. Using the text create to both gesture and meaning, Main applies layers of oil paint, graphite, asphaltum and wax. The result is a depth of surface where some marks receed and others move forward. Expressive gestures become words; words become gestures. The effect is a nonlinear text, much like the subconscious. When the story has been told, the painting is finished.
