Peter Wegner: Remarks on Color

Overview

“If I give someone the order, “fetch me a red flower from the meadow,” how will he know what sort of flower to bring, since I have only given him a word? — Ludwig Wittgenstein, the Blue Book

In this work, Wegner appropriates colors, names and code numbers from a standardized system used by paint and hardware stores across the United States. He then makes paintings of paint chips. Paint chips like those used to pick the color you will paint your bedroom. Each color is coded and named. Names like “Chameleon,” “Solitude,” “Here or There,” “Document,” and “Forever.” Some individual, some grouped, they speak to color, systems of order and the tradition of painting.

This exhibition is accompanied by limited edition artist’s books.
