David Ortins: David Ortins
In his first solo west-coast exhibition, Boston painter David Ortins continues his exploration of form, color and light.
On the pristine, waxy-white surfaces of panels, Ortins applies color. Pure color of a limited palate. Ultramarine blue, hansa yellow, perylene red, and ivory black. Applied with a knife, in clean, confident, gestural strokes. Bold and graphic. The shapes are rhythmic and balanced. The color is luminous — ranging within each mark from translucent to opaque.
For both artists, the enduring quality of the work lies in the paradoxical nature of its creation — the unexpected results achieved through disciplined control over form and process.
