Peter Wegner: Blues
This installation furthers Wegner’s “Remarks on Color” project, exploring color, language and abstraction.
On each 14 x 16 inch panel Wegner paints a single field of color, appropriated from a commercial paint company’s paint sample chip. Each color is reproduced faithfully, with its manufacturer-given name and identification code:
Real Blue / True Blue / Perfect Blue / Ultimate Blue / Always Blue / Endless Blue / Bleu.
There are one hundred forty-four individual panels, each a different blue. They hang on a single horizon-line, forming a band that wraps around the galleries, into the office and out, through the back room and reception area, and into the gallery again.
“THE BLUE BOOKS”
Artist’s Books by Peter Wegner
Accompanying the exhibition is a two-volume set of artist’s books, “Blue ____ and ____ Blue”. The first volume contains forty colors with “blue” used as an adjective in the name: Blue Glint, Blue Glimpse, Blue Vision . . . The second, forty colors with blue as a noun: Distant Blue, Drifting Blue, Dissolving Blue . . . The fields of blue form a horizontal band wrapping around the edges of the French-folded pages.
The edition is limited to 100 sets of two case-bound books in a covered slipcase. The piece uses waterless offset lithography, blind embossing and custom-tinted, fade-resistant inks. It is printed on acid-free paper and bound by hand.
