Overview

Dutch artist Nelleke Beltjens makes small steel sculptures which she sites on the floor. They reference houses, vaults, or crypts but defy the standards of architecture by lacking windows or functional doors. Slits and tiny passageways tease at access but ultimately deny it.

The surfaces range from shiny and polished to scratched and distressed. The weight of these objects—shocking given their size—presses into the floor. They are self-assured in their immobility, secure in their impenetrability.

This is the first solo exhibition for Beltjens.
