Marietta Hoferer: Drawings
German-born, New York-based Marietta Hoferer will present a selection from four recent bodies of works on paper for her first solo exhibition at Hosfelt Gallery.
Hoferer makes drawings that create luminous and beguiling optical effects through the refraction of light on their surfaces. Although the drawings begin with a preconceived structure of precise grids, the artist deliberately invites the interaction of chance, intuition, and imperfection as she works.
The tape drawings are made with thousands of small, hand-cut pieces of transparent, white, or strapping tape. They range from densely-layered, geometric patterns to subtle horizontal bands of white on white. The black drawings involve multiple layers of vertical and horizontal metal-point lines on black clay-coated paper. The “Linien” series consists of faint graphite lines on white paper.
Marietta Hoferer was born in Germany and studied at Hunter College in New York and at St. Martins School of Art and Design in London before receiving an MFA from Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin. Recent exhibitions include KunstBuroBerlin, Berlin; Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, NY; The Drawing Center, New York; and the 2009 International Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale in Seoul, Korea.
