In Pangea 13, the land mass is composed of the countries with the highest rates of emigration... not surprisingly, predominantly countries with in the midst of war or famine. While in historic maps mythical creatures represented the unknown, here they represent the perils inherent in the process of migration and the difficulties of surviving in a foreign culture. But the monsters also speak to the demonization of immigrants. Rodriguez, himself an immigrant from the Philippines, understands the treatment of the migrant as bogeyman.
