Jay DeFeo always worked serially, usually based on some object she was interested in formally. Often the object that was the model for the series was some art-making tool from her studio -- a drafting compass, a roll of scotch tape, a kneadable eraser, the tripod for her camera. The more intriguing she found the object, the more pieces she'd make in the series; the further she got into the series chronologically, the more abstract the artworks would become. She finished a series when she made a piece that perfectly expressed the spirit she was trying to evoke. This painting is the culmination of a group of paintings and drawings she began in 1983 and completed in 1985, that were based on photographs she took of sheets of rolled paper. It, and the piece that immediately preceded it, were dedicated to her mother, who died in the summer of 1983. This painting was exhibited at Janus Gallery in 1985 and was included in an exhibition at University Art Museum at U.C. Berkeley in 1990, which traveled to four additional museum venues.
