Edition 25 is part of series using blocks of resin as ‘screens’ to diffuse the light from the LEDs, effectively transforming light into 3 dimensional form. Here the resin block is mounted flush against a circuit board gridded with LEDs, so that the light retains its pixelated appearance. Like much of Jim’s work, this piece explores the threshold between recognition and abstraction. With a limited color spectrum of only black and white, and gaps of missing information between each LED, the viewer effectively receives very little data. But because the imagery appears to be in motion, our brain automatically fills in the gaps of missing information based on our past experience/memory, and thus we can discern the fluttering black forms as birds.
