Eric Kenneth Fanning (b. July 2, 1968) served as the 22nd United States Secretary of the Army, holding office from May 18, 2016 to January 20, 2017. He was the first openly gay head of any service in the U.S. military.
The Army Service Ribbon was established on April 10, 1981 by the Secretary of the Army. It is a multi-colored (red, orange, yellow, green and blue) ribbon to represent the entire spectrum of military specialities in which officers and enlisted soldiers may enter upon completion of their initial training. It is also strikingly similar to the rainbow flag which has been synonymous with the LGBT pride movement since its creation in the 1970s.
